평점: ★ 5.7 / 10성공한 동화 작가 ‘잭’은 별안간 빅토리아 시대의 연쇄살인에 관한 첫 범죄 소설 집필을 시작하다 살인 사건에 너무 심취한 나머지 자신이 살해당할 거라는 피해망상과 편집증을 겪게 된다.
그러던 어느 날, ‘잭’의 새로운 소설에 관심을 보인 할리우드 제작자 ‘하비 험프리스’와의 약속을 주선한 에이전트 ‘클레어’의 전화에 기쁜 마음도 잠시 깨끗한 옷이 없다는 막막한 현실을 깨닫는다. 당장 빨래를 하지 못할 경우 일자리를 잃을 위기에 처하게 된 ‘잭’은 빨래방에 대한 공포 때문에 망설이지만, ‘프리드킨 박사’와의 상담을 통해 가까스로 용기를 얻어 빨래방으로 향하게 되고 그곳에서 이상형 ‘상기트’를 운명적으로 만난다. 우여곡절 끝에 빨래를 끝마친 ‘잭’은 빨래방을 나서 약속 장소로 향하지만 괴한으로부터 납치를 당하고 마는데…
