1968년, 소년 태드(Young Thad Beaumont: 패트릭 브라난 분)는 어느 날 수많은 새떼가 날아오는 환상을 보고 두통으로 쓰러진다. 그런 일이 반복되자 태드는 뇌수술을 받게 되고, 의사는 태드의 머리 속에서 눈알 하나, 비강 일부, 치아 두 개를 발견한다. 의사는 그것이 태드의 쌍둥이로 수태되었다가 태드의 몸 속에 흡수되어 죽어버린 또 다른 태아의 흔적이라고 결론짓는다. 23년 후, 영문학 교수이자 소설가로 성장한 태드(Thad Beaumont / George Stark: 티모시 허튼 분)는 조지 스타크(George Stark)라는 가명으로 통속 소설을 발표, 베스트셀러 작가가 되지만 본명으로 발표한 순수 문학 작품은 독자들의 반응을 얻지 못한다. 그때 협잡꾼 클로슨(Fred Clawson: 로버트 조이 분)이 나타나 가명 사용의 비밀을 신문에 공개하겠다며 돈을 요구한다. 태드는 고민 끝에 유령 작가의 이름으로는 더이상 글을 쓰지 않기로 결심하고, 가명으로 소설을 발표해온 사실을 신문에 공개한다. 그런데 그때부터 태드의 결정에 직간접으로 관계했던 사람들이 차례로 살해되기 시작하고, 경찰은 태드를 범인으로 의심하는데...
