조용하던 작은 마을에 괴짜로 소문한 모나가 자동차를 타고 가다 물에 빠져 죽는 사고가 발생한다. 그녀의 죽음이 누군가에 의한 살인사건임이 밝혀지자 마을은 벌집을 쑤셔 놓은 듯 술렁인다. 경찰관 텍스는 수사에 들어가고 모나에게 늘 야단맞기 일쑤였던 그녀의 아들 친구인 제프가 용의자로 떠오른다. 제프는 무죄를 주장하나 모나의 남편 필립마저 물에 빠져 죽은 시체로 발견되자 상황이 점점 바비에게 불리하게 돌아가게 된다.
