네브라스카의 한 마을. 아이들에게 악령의 지배가 시작되고 그로 인해 어른들을 향한 소름끼치는 살인이 시작된다. 이를 취재하기 위해 보도진이 마을로 몰려들지만 마을 주민들은 냉담한 반응을 보이고 살인의 원인은 발견할 수 없다. 이 충격적인 스토리를 취재, 특종을 잡으려고하는 리포터 존 가렛(John Garrett: 테렌스 녹스 분)도 자신의 아들과 함께 이 마을로 온다. 아들 대니(Danny: 폴 쉐러 분)는 이혼한 존의 부인에 의해 키워진 반항적인 소년. 그는 아버지와의 여행이 반갑지 않지만 마을에서 만난 소녀의 사랑으로 마을에 머물게되고, 존과 대니 부자는 부모의 죽음으로 고아가 된 미카를 맡아 키우는 안젤라의 집에 머물게 되고 존과 안젤라는 사랑에 빠지게 된다. 이상한 눈빛의 미카. 그는 어느날 밤 옥수수밭에서 이상한 죽음의 간부를 받고 다시 살아나 마을의 어린이들을 향해 끔직한 살인의 계시를 실행한다. 뒤이어 마을 어른들이 차례로 잔혹한 죽음을 당하는데 우연히 이 죽음의 장면을 대니가 목격한다. 한편 존은 사건을 파헤치던 중 프랭크 레드베어라는 인류학자를 만나 미스테리를 여는 결정적 단서를 얻는다.
