평점: ★ 6 / 10시장의 공보관으로 활약하는 성공한 흑인 렌 메디슨(Len Madison Jr.: 그레고리 하인즈 분)은 어느날 우편으로 송부된 낡은 사진 하나를 받는다. 사진 속 자신의 아버지가 여러 백인들에게 둘러싸여 교수형당하는 모습에 충격을 받은 렌은 부친의 죽음에 얽힌 경위를 밝히고자 그의 고향 남부 조지아로 향한다. 주민들의 비협조로 30년전 강간죄로 교수형당했다는 사실을 알아냈을뿐 그 이상의 진전을 보지 못하던 렌은 어느날 강간 피해자로 알려진 백인 여자를 수소문끝에 찾아내지만 식물 인간으로 병상에 누운지 오래고, 당시 사건현장에 있었던 증인으로 유일한 생존자인 스탠마저 지난날의 과오를 사죄한다는 유서를 남긴채 자살하는데...
