1년전 아버지를 잃은 베스(Beth Easton: 크리스티나 리치 분)는 한적한 삶을 원하는 어머니를 따라 LA에서 작은 시골마을로 이주해 온다. 새로운 생활에 적응하면서 베스는 그곳에서 소문난 불량아 조디(Jody Salerno: 안나 클럼스키 분)와 급속히 가까워지고 조디의 자유분방한 태도에 신선함을 느낀다. 베스와 마찬가지로 어머니와 단 둘이 사는 조디는 도둑질을 잘하며, 남들에게 알려진 것보다 더 불행한 가정 환경을 가진 소녀다. 알콜 중독자인 어머니와 술에 취하면 폭행을 일삼는 어머니의 남자친구 레이 사이에서 조디의 유일한 도피처는 전설처럼 전해 내려오는 몰리 모건의 이야기 뿐이다. 험악한 집안분위기를 피해 동네부근의 곰산(베어 마운틴)으로 피신하는 것에 익숙한 조디는 여자 홀몸으로 갖은 고생과 수차례의 죽을 고비를 넘긴 끝에 곰산에서 금광을 발굴한 몰리 모건을 존경하며, 그녀처럼 곰산에 남아 있는 금을 찾게 되길 희망한다. 금광의 위치를 알려주는 책을 입수한 조디는 베스를 설득해 곰산으로 향하던 중 뜻밖의 산사태로 베스가 부상을 입게 되고, 조디의 노력으로 베스는 간신히 구조된다. 곰산으로 가면서 조디의 가정사정에 대해 어느 정도 알게 된 베스는 그후 집에 갇혀 지내는 내내 조디의 안전을 걱정한다. 겨우 조디를 만나도 된다는 허락을 얻어낸 베스는 조디의 집을 찾아가지만 정신을 잃은 채 쓰러져 있는 조디의 어머니만을 발견한다. 조디에게서 레이가 금광에 관심이 많다는 이야기를 들었던 베스는 구조대와 함께 조디를 구하러 곰산으로 올라가는데..
