이란성 쌍둥이인 마티(빌리 제인)와 캐롤(지나 거손)은 어린 시절 아버지의 불륜 현장에서 벌어진 총격 살인극을 목격한다. 아버지는 오히려 간통 현장에서 정부의 남편을 살해하고 살인범으로 기소돼 처형당한다. 마티와 캐롤은 성장해 각각 가정을 꾸리지만 당연히 정상적이지 못하다. 둘은 공공연하게 근친상간 관계를 유지하며 그런 둘을 비난하는 어머니를 약물로 살해하기까지 한다. 죄의식이라고는 눈꼽 만큼도 없는 이들은 한 명은 매춘을 통해 돈을 벌고 또 한 명은 매저키스틱한 성적 욕망에 몸을 떠는 여자 경찰 루이스의 '기둥서방'으로 생계를 이어 간다. 하지만 이들의 관심은 오로지 하나. 어디선가 돈을 '후려내서' 둘만의 보금자리를 찾아 떠나는 것이다. 어느 날 여느 때와 같이 '있어 보이는' 남자를 유혹해 잠자리를 같이 하게 된 캐롤은 정사 도중 어린 시절의 악몽을 떠올리면서 남자를 무참하게 살해한다.
