결벽증이 있던 캐롤(Carol Rivers: 제니퍼 제이슨 리 분)은 사귀던 남자가 너무 집요하게 육체관계를 요구하자 그의 얼굴을 할켜서 심한 부상을 입힌다. 그뒤로 그녀는 모든 소리가 안들리게 되어 정신과 의사의 치료를 받는다. 어느 정도 병세가 나아지나 퇴원한 캐롤은 가족들의 만류에도 불구하고 유산으로 받은 플렛쳐(Fletcher: 샘 스카치 분) 삼촌의 클럽을 수리하여 개업하기 위하여 집을 떠난다. 그러나 그곳은 유명했던 음란 술집으로 캐롤리 도착했을 땐 이미 폐허가 되다시피 했고 조금은 음산한 기분이 엄습하는 기분 나쁜 곳이었다. 그리고 도착하자마자 침입한 건달들에 의해 폭행당하기 직전에 경찰에 의해 구출이 된다. 그러나 경찰측은 그녀를 정신이상자로 취급하고 전혀 그녀의 말에는 신경을 쓰지 않았다. 밤이면 시작되는 악몽의 연속, 뭔가에 의해 감시당한다는 느낌이 줄곳 들자 캐롤은 자신의 신경쇠약 증세가 재발한 것이라고 생각을 하는데 어느날 나타난 래리(Sharpe/Larry: 피터 코요테 분)라는 남자에 의해 미드나잇클럽의 전모가 밝혀지기 시작한다. 플렛쳐에 의해 성도착자로 사육당해진 래리의 동생 소니(Sonny: 게일 메이론 분)가 플렛쳐의 조카인 캐롤에게 복수하고픈 일념에 그집에 만들어진 비밀통로로 드나들며 캐롤을 괴롭히고 있었던 것이었는데...
